What to do in Kyiv: digest for the last weekend of July

With cafes and venues buzzing with generators, you can still enjoy cultural festivals, outdoor adventures, cozy cafes, and serene parks. Or even go on protests to protest against architectural heritage ruination or bring attention to Azov Stal Defenders that are still in captivity. Olenivka: The Quintessence of Cruelty

Azov Stal Families organization in cooperation with National Museum of Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv is opening an exhibition dedicated to the second anniversary of the Olenivka tragedy. This exhibition serves as a stark reminder of the brutalities faced by Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians in the Olenivka detention facility.

What Doors Talk About
(What Doors Talk About) is an exhibition in Kyiv aimed at raising funds for the restoration fund of the NGO “True Kyiv.” The exhibition explores the historical and cultural significance of doors in urban architecture, presenting them as silent witnesses to the city’s past and present. Through various artistic interpretations, the exhibition showcases how doors reflect social, historical, and personal narratives.
One of the founders of the fund, Serhii Myronov, who was also the author of Vanishing Kyiv Project, died in the Russian-Ukrainian war, in 2022, defending our country.

Матерія Matters: The Exhibition of Ukrainian Art Textiles
The “Матерія Matters” exhibition at the Ukrainian House in Kyiv showcases the evolution of Ukrainian art textiles over the past 100 years. Featuring over 120 works by around 60 artists, it explores themes of memory, collective trauma, political resistance, and ecological issues. The exhibition highlights how textiles have transformed in response to societal challenges and are presented as both functional and high art.

Between Farewell and Return
“Between Farewell and Return” at Mystetskyi Arsenal in Kyiv focuses on the effects of war. The exhibition includes artworks that tell stories of memory, displacement, and the emotions of people affected by war.

Vsi Svoi: Summer Home
(Summer Home) is an exhibition and market organized by Всі Свої (Vsi Svoi), featuring over 150 Ukrainian producers. It’s a perfect opportunity to explore and purchase unique, locally-made items to enhance your home.

Yes, the locals of Kyiv do find time to go on protests to defend our rights just as well. Because it is always the right time.
Protest Against Destructionn of Kyiv Historical Heritage

A significant protest erupted last weekend in front of the local government building in Kyiv after the unauthorized demolition of the historic Zelensky mansion on 19th of July. This mansion, located at 22 Konissky Street, was a cherished architectural landmark built in the late 19th century. The demolition, carried out by unidentified individuals using heavy machinery, has sparked widespread outrage among Kyiv residents and heritage activists.
This Saturday, the protest will happen again in front of the Kyiv City Council.
